Greenwich Beaches Now Open to Swimming
All four beaches opened Wednesday, after being closed for two days due to heavy rains from Tropical Storm Irene.
Greenwich opened its four beaches for swimming Wednesday after water samples collected Tuesday by the town Health Department showed the water had safe levels of bacteria.
Typically beaches on Long Island Sound are closed to swimming after two inches of rain, due to the risk of elevated levels of bacteria due to storm runoff, coming mainly from private septic systems.
Meanwhile numerous state beaches along the Sound, including in Westport, were closed to swimming today, as the state was using extra caution. Sherwood Island is reportedly expected to open to swimming on Saturday, just in time for Labor Day weekend.
