[Update] Greenwich Woman Hurt in Vehicle Rollover

The 2004 Lexus sedan was heading south on North Street when it flipped and struck a utility pole near number 516.

Greenwich Police say the woman driver whose car struck a tree and flipped over before splintering a utility pole in the 500 block of North Street Sunday morning probably suffered a medical incident before the crash.

Lt. Kraig Gray said," We have witnesses that said it appears the vehicle started to weave from one side to the other. She hit a tree, flipped over and then hit the telephone pole." He added, "It is believed she suffered some sort of medical issue."

According to Gray, "Her license was seized — meaning she has to be medically clear before being issued her license."

It took emergency personnel about an hour to extricate the driver, whose identity was not released by police. The road was closed for nearly six hours as utility crews worked to replace the pole.

A section of North Street from Dingletown Road to Taconic Road was shut down earlier today due to a single-car motor vehicle accident that occurred about 9:20 a.m. It was the .

“At 0920 hrs there was a one car rollover accident into a utility pole in the area of 516 North Street,” Greenwich Police Lieutenant Kraig Gray said in an alert this morning. “The operator was transported to the Greenwich Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.”

The alert said North Street would be closed to through traffic until at least 2 p.m.

According to a report in the Greenwich Time, the 2004 Lexus sedan was heading south on North Street when it flipped and struck a utility pole near number 516. The woman, a Greenwich resident, was issued a citation for unsafe movement, according to the report, which put the time of the accident about 40 minutes earlier, 8:40 a.m. Police did not release her name.

It took firefighters more than an hour to extricate the driver, who was suspended upside down in the car by her seatbelt, according to the report. The road was closed while CL&P workers replaced the utility pole, the report states.

North Street reportedly reopened to through traffic at 3:45 p.m.
