Post-Irene, Greenwich Mostly Inconvenienced
Neighbors Turn Out for a Look on a Partly-Sunny Sunday Afternoon
In the wake of Irene, there were relatively few signs of havoc in Greenwich by Sunday afternoon. On Greenwich Avenue, you wouldn’t know there had even been a hurricane but for the redundant sandbags and plywood storefronts. Better safe than sorry.
Bruce Park, however, remain mostly under water at 3:00 p.m.. One resident taking a walk in the park just shrugged. “We have no electricity or phones, but we’re all well and safe, so no complaints.” Two blocks over a large tree had taken down power and phone lines on Indian Harbor Drive.
At Greenwich High School, at the edge of the newly paved south lot, the babbling brook that skirts the property was swollen. At the normally-gentle waterfall, water was running fast and furious before dipping under Putnam Avenue and crossing into Milbrook.

Over in Glenville at The Mill, the waterfall that once powered a felt factory was quite a fierce sight and it seemed the entire neighborhood, mostly without electricity, had turned out for a look.
Referring to the March 2010 storm, Susan Franco of Glenville commented, “Irene was nothing like Tree-pocalypse. It seemed most of the trees that were going to fall came down then. This was mainly a water event.”
