Severe Thunderstorm Warning Extended to 10 P.M. (Update)

Entire state of Connecticut now included in warning.

The National Weather Service has extended its severe thunderstorm warning to include the entire state of Connecticut. The NWS said a severe storm was tracked at 2:30 in Redding and Easton, and is moving southeast at 20 mph. 

The NWS warning said "Lightning is one of nature's number one killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter immediately.

At 1:49 p.m. dime-sized hail was reported in Danbury. The storm is moving southeast at 20 mph.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Fairfield County in Southern Connecticut, including Greenwich, until at least 2:30 p.m.

The advisory states that this severe thunderstorm is “capable of producing quarter size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.  The storm was located near Danbury and moving southeast at 25 mph” as of 12:52 p.m. Golf-ball sized hail has been reported in Newtown and Monroe, according to the weather service.

“This is a dangerous storm,” reads the warning. “If you are in its path, prepare immediately for damaging winds, destructive hail, and deadly cloud to ground lightning. People outside should move to a shelter, preferably inside a strong building but away from windows.”
