Act
II, set to open for the season Oct. 2, is the consignment boutique of The
Women’s Fellowship of Second Congregational Church. It occupies the first floor
of the church-owned house at 48 Maple Ave., just off East Putnam Avenue. The
stone home was built in 1858 for church member Solomon Mead and his family.

The
boutique sells women’s, men’s and children’s clothing; jewelry; bric-a-brac and
other household items; cookbooks and children’s books; and small furniture in a
friendly atmosphere. Items are gently used or, in some cases, never used.

The goals of Act II are to raise money for outreach and the church, provide fellowship for the women of the church, and provide a service to the community.

“We
designed Act II to let shoppers feel like they’re in a retail store,” said Pat
Knight, Act II chairman. “Clothing is in style, and it’s arranged by size, cleaned
and pressed, and displayed on plastic hangers and mannequins.”

Knight
said Act II appeals to value-conscious consumers and people who want to support
community outreach. Goods may be consigned or donated, with tax deductions
available in both cases.

“Some
people consign and shop for financial reasons while others do it just for fun,”
she added.

Since
its founding more than 35 years ago, Act II has raised more than $1 million for
outreach. Proceeds benefit various nonprofit organizations, including Neighbor to Neighbor, Greenwich Adult Day Care, Call-A-Ride, Meals On Wheels, Jewish Family Service, The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Church World Service, Friends of Bosnia. The Women’s Fellowship also provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors.

The
boutique is staffed by volunteers and one paid employee.

Act
II will operate Oct. 2 through June 11 before taking the summer off. It is open
to shoppers Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as Thursdays and
Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Consignments and donations are accepted
Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A
special event will be the annual Christmas boutique on Nov. 2.
