Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol To Honor State Rep. Camillo At Weekend Benefit

The all-volunteer patrol is holding a benefit this weekend and will present Fred Camillo with the first-ever Chief's Award.

When the Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol holds its inaugural benefit this weekend, they'll also be honoring state Rep. Fred Camillo with the patrol's newly-created Chief's Award.

The event will be held at Greenwich Country Day School, 401 Old Church Rd., from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, April 5. Camillo will be honored for his work and dedication to the fire police community at the benefit, which will feature dinner, dancing and live and silent auctions.

Passing the Bill

In the past year, Camillo has worked on both state and local levels, and helped pass the Fire Police Bill, a law that makes it an infraction for not obeying traffic signals given by fire police officers. Camillo proposed the bill after a Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol volunteer was struck by a car driven by a man who ignored orders not to drive through an area where trees and wires had fallen during a storm.

According to patrol officials, "This bill is vital to the ability of our fire police patrolmen to properly and safely direct traffic at fire and accident scenes when safety and orderly traffic flow is crucial, giving them the authority they need to perform their services."

That wasn't the first time Camillo (R-151) has gone to bat for the fire police. In 2010, Camillo was instrumental in helping the Fire Indemnification Bill be signed into law. The law protects volunteer firemen and ambulance service from liability in the course of their duties protecting the public and added Fire Police Patrol Officers to the list of those to be protected and indemnified.

Camillo said he is honored to receive the award. But he said the unsung heroes are the volunteers of the fire police. "They are based in Cos Cob but people don't realize that they serve the entire town. Whether it's a fire or an accident on I-95, they are there," said Camillo, who grew up in Cos Cob and is an associate member of the fire patrol.
