Boy Scouts Take Over Great Captain’s Island

Great Captain’s Island was recently taken over by the Greenwich Boy Scouts’ Fall Camporee, where they camped, cooked, competed and performed a well-needed clean-up service project on the Island.  80 Scouts and volunteers from Troops 1, 9, 10, 11, and 35 took ferries over to the island on a Saturday morning and camped out on the island overnight.

Since last year’s storm, Hurricane Sandy, as well as regular summer traffic on the Long Island Sound, Scouts had their work cut out for them as they cleaned up trash and took out erosion tarps that were no longer functioning correctly.  Everyone enjoyed nature walks led by Mike Aurelia and Lighthouse tours by Great Captain’s Island Caretaker Mike Nickerson.  Highlights of the event included the island-wide capture the flag game and the Dutch oven dessert cook-off, which ended in a tie between Troop 10 patrol’s chocolate dump cake and one of Troop 35’s patrol’s peach cobbler!

Greenwich Boy Scouts participate in a fall Camporee every year, taking part in Patrol based competitions, camping and a service project.  A patrol is a small group of boys within the Troop who are similar in age, development, and interests.  For over 100 years Greenwich Scouting has delivered quality programs to nearly 2,500 local youth annually.  Scouting youth participate in fun programs, such as the Fall Camporee event, that build character, foster volunteerism and explore the outdoors, all helping to prepare them for life.  Through continued partnerships and the efforts of more than 300 dedicated volunteers, Greenwich Scouting looks forward to providing greater opportunities to boys and girls, through Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, Venturing Crews, Explorer Posts and Learning For Life Groups for the next 100 years!  For more information about local Scouting visit www.GreenwichScouting.org.
