Thousands braved the chilly, gusty winds Sunday afternoon for the 40th annual Greenwich Hibernians St. Patrick's Day parade.
Multiple generations of families tailgated on Greenwich Avenue to see at least six marching bands — including the Westchester County Firefighters Pipe Band, the Greenwich High School Marching Band, the Port Chester High School Marching Band and a jazz band from Westchester that enthused the crowds with their rendition o f Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline.'
The parade started off at Greenwich Town Hall on Field Point Road when Greenwich Police Marine Officer Sean Fox sounded the whistle at 2 p.m. March 23. Hundreds of marchers — who followed the Greenwich Police Motorcycle Unit and the department's Honor Guard — walked the nearly 1.5-mile route.
Greenwich businessman and Port Chester, NY native Bill Gallagher, a founder of Summer Rain Sprinklers, was the grand marshal. Marchers included Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, local civic organizations including the Greenwich Rotary, the Ancient Order of Red Men, the Greenwich Kiwanis as well as the Greenwich Hospital, the First Bank of Greenwich and all the town's volunteer fire departments and the Greenwich Emergency Medical Service.
There were plenty of local politicians too — from the Board of Selectmen who rode in Audi convertibles, courtesy of New Country Audi in Greenwich to the town's state representative delegation — Reps. Livvy Floren, Fred Camillo and Steve Walko.
