A Few Things About Fur

What to do with unwanted furs, the truth about "fake fur," the ban of fur sales in West Hollywood, and starting peaceful anti-fur demonstrations in Greenwich

A few weeks ago, I decided that I would like to expand my animal activism to include the fur industry after reading too many horrific details and seeing too many horrific photographs.  A study was conducted recently that uncovered 8 out of 25 coats lined with "fake fur" at Burlington Coat Factory were actually dog or cat fur.  The dog/cat fur trade in China is absolutely heartbreaking and maddening - can you imagine your Golden Retriever being skinned alive?  I made a decision a long time ago that I'd never wear fur and am now realizing that many others who have made the same promise may be wearing dog or cat fur without realizing it.  I'd say just stay away from fur whether it's "fake" or not.

I realize that many people out there may have old or unwanted fur coats - maybe they were received as gifts or were purchased at a time before one made the commitment not to wear fur.  If you have an old fur hiding in your closet, you have a few options: donate the fur to a homeless person, sell the fur and donate the money to a charity, or my favorite - donate the fur to a wildlife rehabilitation group so that they can use the fur for baby orphaned animals.  www.wildliferehabber.com

I'd also like to share a recent victory in fighting the fur trade.  The city of West Hollywood, California has just passed an ordinance that bans the sale of fur within city limits!  (West Hollywood has had in effect a ban on the retail sale of cats and dogs as well.)  If West Hollywood can take these steps to protect animals, any city or town can.

I have decided that I will start peaceful demonstrations at the fur shop at the top of Greenwich Ave.  No graphic PETA images, I promise!  I'd really just like to promote the donation of unwanted furs to orphaned animals, and yes, I want to remind those who wear fur of the cruelty they are causing.  Please let me know if you'd be interested in joining me!
