John S. Semsel Jr., 82; U.S. Navy Veteran, Active in Greenwich Boy Scouts


John Stephen Semsel Jr., of Greenwich, passed away on Dec. 11 at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home. He was 82.

He was born in Stamford, the son of John S. Semsel and Clara P. Pfeiffer.

He graduated from Stamford High School, as well as JM Wright Technical School and the University of Bridgeport. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956.

He was active in scouting as both a scoutmaster and unit commissioner within the Greenwich Council of the Boy Scouts of America and received the Greenwich Scouter Award in 1986 in recognition of his outstanding service.

Mr. Semsel is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Semsel, his son, Jay and wife, Lisa and grandchildren, Drew and Amanda. He also is survived by his siblings, Robert Semsel (Mary), Donald Semsel (Diane), and Joan Theiss.

He was predeceased by his devoted wife of 36 years, Georgeanne Katherine Bartos Semsel. 

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Monday, Dec. 16 at 9:30 a.m. at the Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave, Greenwich. The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 10:30 a.m. at the Funeral Home.
