Mary Graham Hull Old, 86; Greenwich Resident, Garden Club Member

A reception in Mrs. Old's memory will be held Thursday, June 19.

Mary Graham Hull Old, a long-time resident of Greenwich, passed away on June 8, 2014. She was 86.

Born in Roanoke, VA, she was the daughter of David Denton Hull Jr. and Elizabeth Duval Adams Hull.

Following graduation from Harcum Junior College, she worked for an architectural firm in Roanoke for many years. It was during this time that she began her courtship with her future husband of 56 years, Jonathan W. Old Jr., after meeting at the University of Virginia, his alma mater.

She was always very involved in civic, church and community affairs wherever she lived, serving as a nurses' aid, President of The Junior League of Roanoke, a long-time Board Member of the Greenwich Garden Club and a member of The Round Hill Club in Greenwich.

She loved New York City, particularly the theater, and the beautiful beaches and lifestyle of Nantucket Island where she owned a home and vacationed for many summers. In their later years, she and her husband spent many winter months at their home in Ocean Ridge, FL.

Endowed with a sense of style, a sense of humor and an outgoing personality, she was known for her dedication and unwavering loyalty to friends and family as well as her thoughtfulness and generosity. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed tennis, needlework, travel and dancing.

She was nicknamed "The Hat Lady", as her closets were always stocked with various hats for different occasions. On every holiday of the year, she adorned an amusing, befitting costume accentuated by a coordinating headband or hat, which brought amusement to all who saw her.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Jonathan W. Old III and Elizabeth Adams Old Ker of New Canaan, and four grandchildren, Emily Ann Old, Madeleine Duval Ker, Abigail James Ker and Robert Walker Ker IV. She was passionate about her grandchildren and took great interest in their endeavors.

A family service will be held in Roanoke, VA. A reception will be held at The Round Hill Club, 33 Round Hill Rd., Greenwich, on Thursday, June 19 from 12 to 2 p.m.
