May McAndrews, 92; St. Mary Parish Secretary

May McAndrews, a lifelong Greenwich resident, died Oct. 31, 2013 after a brief illness. She was 92.

May was born in Stamford on May 18, 1921, the daughter of the late John Flannery and Elizabeth Keating Flannery, and moved to Greenwich shortly after.

May was a 1939 Greenwich High School graduate. She worked at Putnam Trust Co. and married Bud McAndrews on Sept. 6, 1947. May worked as a parish secretary at St. Mary Parish in Greenwich from 1966 until 1977 and volunteered at the parish for many years afterward.

May loved reading going to tag sales, trips to Island Beach, Pro football, and baseball (the Redsox). May was the founder of Cousins' Day, the Annual Flannery Family Reunion held at Island Beach in August. May was proud of her Irish heritage May's favorite holiday was St. Patrick's Day and she could be found, at the St. Patrick's Day Parade in front of St. Mary's every year. One of the top sellers at the St. Mary Ladies Guild was May's Irish soda Bread Bake Sale during sidewalk sales days.

May is survived by her sons Bill (Sandy) of Cos Cob and Jim (Becky) of Fairfield; four grandchildren (Jim Gartner, Kelly, Lee and Bridget McAndrews); a brother Bill Flannery, a sister Eileen Gove, and several nieces and nephews. 

May was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Bud McAndrews; a brother John Flannery, and a sister Helen Flannery. 

The family is especially grateful to Precious Opoku, May's wonderful caregiver.

Friends may call at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich, from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at St. Mary Church, 178 Greenwich Ave.
