Construction Mishap Shuts Road Near Western Junior Middle School

Gas leak caused by construction crew.

A 'minor' knick to a gas line in front of Western Middle School Monday morning closed roads in the local neighborhood, just off West Putnam Avenue.

According to police and Glenville fire officials at the scene, the the incident caused what originally was thought to be a major gas leak about 9:50 a.m. It turned out to be a minor leak and gas utility and Greenwich Fire Department officials scuttled  plans to evacuate the immediate area - including  homes at the bottom of Henry Street, Richland Avenue and the middle school where summer school classes were in session.

Crews from Connecticut Natural Gas were at the scene in less than 10 minutes. The incident apparently was caused by crews excavating dirt along the roadway to install curbing.
