Demand for a Free Drink Ends with Man's Arrest

A man who bellied up to the bar and demanded a patron buy him a drink was arrested after he reportedly slapped the patron who refused to buy the drink.

According to a Greenwich Police report, the unidentified victim told officers that the suspect approached him at the Sundown Saloon, 403 Greenwich Ave., shortly after 1 a.m. Nov. 24 and demanded he buy him a drink. If the victim didn't buy the drink, the suspect reportedly said he would slap the victim.

The suspect, identified as Mark Piro, 29, of Overlook Drive, Greenwich, then reportedly hit the victim on the shoulder and face, according to the report. A witness confirmed the victim's account of the incident.

Officers viewed security video and saw the victim sitting alone when he was approached by Piro, who spoke with the man before hitting him. A bouncer in the saloon tried to break up the altercation, according to the report.

Piro was charged with second-degree breach of peace and released on a promise to appear Dec. 2 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
