Lightning Strikes Cos Cob

A chimney was damaged during Friday storm.

As the town of Greenwich tried to sleep during the latest batch of thunderstorms passing through the region early Friday, one Cos Cob resident was awakened by a noisy bolt.

Greenwich Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Zack, a lightning bolt struck a fire place chimney in the Mead's Landing condominium complex on River Road in Cos Cob. A series of storms passed through the area about 5:30 a.m. Friday.

No injuries were reported nor any fire damage, according to Zack.

First Selectman Peter Tesei, who until recently lived in the complex, said one of his neighbors woke to find a pile of chimney bricks scattered outside her condo unit.

The town building department and fire marshals office were called in to survey damage, Zack said. Efforts to reach them were unsuccessful Friday.
