Mianus River Bridge Flags Now Under 24-hour Surveillance

A video camera was reportedly installed about two weeks ago on the roof of a Greenwich Public Works building on River Road to keep a lookout for vandals who have been damaging American flags on the Route 1 Mianus River Bridge.

Vandals contemplating another attack on the American flags on the Mianus River Bridge on East Putnam Avenue had better think twice: The flags — which have been — are now reportedly under 24-hour video surveillance.

As reported on Greenwich Patch, seven of the 20 flags — there are 10 on each side of the bridge — were . Three — and one was vandalized on Aug. 27. In some of the incidents the flag poles were either snapped or bent, while in others flags were damaged or removed.

According to a report in the Greenwich Time, an assistant chief with the Cos Cob Fire Department — which helps install and maintain the flags — told a friend who works for a local security company about the recent acts of vandalism. The friend, in turn, managed to secure a video camera and some additional equipment which was donated by a vendor, according to the report. The security company then installed the video camera for no charge on the roof of the Department of Public Works building at the corner of River Road and East Putnam.

The camera was reportedly installed about two weeks ago — after the most recent act of vandalism on Aug. 26. However police are not commenting on the video footage captured thus far or the investigation, which is ongoing.
