Store Clerk Charged with Trying to Burglarize Glenville Supermarket

Suspect caught on the roof of Stop & Shop ... where he worked.

The report late Friday to Greenwich Police was “a suspicious subject on the roof.”

At 10:13 p.m., it might be suspicious for anyone to be on the roof of the local Stop & Shop supermarket at 11 Glen Ridge St. … even if it’s an employee.

Several officers were dispatched to the store – which had just closed minutes earlier at 10 p.m. – and climbed onto the roof. It is there they found the suspect trying to hide near an air conditioning unit, along with a bag of tools containing a mallet, a roofing hammer, wire cutters, pliers and a knife, according to a Greenwich Police report.

They also found a two-foot square hole cut through the roof that would have given the suspect access to the store’s interior.

Police charged store employee Daniel Martinez, 22, who gave an address of 14 Hollow Wood Lane, Greenwich, with criminal attempt at third-degree burglary; possession of burglar tools and first-degree criminal mischief. Police said the damage to the roof was “estimated to be over $1,500.”

Martinez, who police said worked in the store, was released after posting $15,000 bond and scheduled to appear March 14 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
