Greenwich Hires A New IT Director

Greenwich resident Thomas Klein will takeover the reins of the department in mid-April.

Greenwich resident Thomas J. Klein has been appointed the Director of Information Technology for the Town of Greenwich.

Klein, who was selected from an original pool of 52 applicants after an extensive search process, has an impressive record of achievement in the world of information technology. Klein, whose appointment was approved by the Board of Selectmen Feb. 20, will begin take over the department on April 16. He will earn $150,000.

He will succeed Boris Hutorin, who has given notice he will retire in April. Hutorin has been in charge of the town's IT department for 10 years. His salary is $145,873.

Klein is a senior content architect with Avon Products in New York City where he is responsible for planning, design, delivery and support of Avon’s digital marketing ecosystems, which are comprised of multinational websites, mobile applications, and social media commerce in more than 60 international markets and for more than six million sales representatives world-wide.

First Selectman Peter J. Tesei said that he and the search committee believed that, "Given his work experience, Mr. Klein has a clear understanding of the management issues faced by a small IT department serving a large organization and proven technical ability in operating the ‘nuts and bolts’ of an IT system as well as internet based systems and social media."

Tesei, added, "Moreover, he has a demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff and develop consensus across multiple departments. An excellent communicator, Mr. Klein is able to convert ‘IT speak’ into understandable language for non-IT professionals.”

Prior to joining Avon, Klein was a senior director at Time Inc. where he was in charge of strategy and oversight of content initiatives across the enterprise, including goal alignment between IT and digital brands. Klein was responsible for designing, developing and supporting applications and for technology operations for the company’s most profitable group of brands including Entertainment Weekly, Fortune, InStyle, Money, People, Sports Illustrated, and Time. Klein also worked as IT director for Forbes Inc. where he was responsible for the round-the-clock global operations and technology strategic planning.

Klein is an Iona College graduate and earned a master’s in management information systems from Boston University.

Tesei also said, “We believe that Tom Klein has just the right combination of experience, expertise and personal qualities to lead the Town of Greenwich’s IT efforts for the betterment of our community and its citizens and employees.”
