New York's Houlihan Lawrence Hires Away Greenwich's Top Producers for CT Presence

Eighteen realtors made the jump to Houlihan Lawrence, sending shock waves through the real estate community.

Longtime New York-based real estate company Houlihan Lawrence has crossed the line. The state line, that is.

The longstanding real estate firm, known leaders in Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties, have updated their home page with the message: "Moving to Greenwich? We beat you to it."

Two clicks away, at the Connecticut 'communities' page, the choices are Cos Cob, Riverside, Old Greenwich or Greenwich.

Click Cos Cob and the message reads: "A harbor town bordered by the Long Island Sound and Mianus River."

Riverside is described as a spirited community that offers an abundance of outdoor and recreational activities.

Over a photo of sailboats at Greenwich Community Sailing the Old Greenwich description reads, "The charm of an authentic New England town with miles of beaches, parks, and recreation."

Click Greenwich proper and a photo of the Town's Island Beach ferry pops up with the Delamar in the background. The heading is, "A cosmopolitan lifestyle enhanced by the shoreline of the Long Island Sound and the area's natural beauty."

The news of 18 veteran real estate professionals making a move – with names well known among their peers and everyone who peruses listings as a hobby – was something of a shakeup.

Whereas in the past, new players would enter the Greenwich real estate scene through a merger or acquisition – Preferred Properties merged into Coldwell Banker and Cleveland, Duble & Arnold, for example, was absorbed by Sotheby's – the Houlihan Lawrence strategy is different.

After a period of rumors, local realtors learned the news of the departures by checking the MLS board in their offices, where names of realtors transferring from one firm to another are listed.

According to the Houlihan Lawrence website, in 1888, William Lawrence established the company, "a family-owned realtor with a successful track record of 125 years of leadership," and lists the leadership as Nancy Seaman (Chairman), Stephen Meyers (President, CEO) and Chris Meyers (Managing Principal).

The new player in town changes the real estate landscape significantly. What one realtor referred to as the existing "referral highway," will detour to Houlihan Lawrence. Also, the departure of 18 top producers means the loss of a significant chunk of business for the firms they leave behind. The departure of successful agents, who one long time Greenwich realtor referred to as "heavy hitters," will significantly affect the income streams of those operations.

Welcome to Greenwich, Houlihan Lawrence.
