First Church Preschoolers Get Inside Look at Police K-9 Unit

The Greenwich Police Department's K-9 unit visited the Old Greenwich school.

Greenwich Police Officer Mike Macchia and his partner, Tyro, of the department's K-9 Unit visited the First Congregational Church Preschool Monday as part of the preschool's month-long focus on pets.

Macchia answered questions from the students — ages 3 to 5 about the duo's police work. The visit was coordinated by teacher Barbara Andersen.

Macchia and K-9 Tyro became the department's fourth K-9 team in Greenwich in 2007. Tyro, a German Shepherd from Czechoslovakia, is certified in patrol procedures by the Connecticut State Police and the United States Police Canine Association. In 2008, Tyro also was trained and certified in narcotics detection by the Connecticut State Police.
