GHS Boys Lacrosse Coach: 'We Learned Some Things Today'

Here’s something Greenwich High School boys’ lacrosse offensive coach Kevin Faughnan said after Thursday’s 12-0 loss at the hands of defending FCIAC champion New Canaan: “We took our lumps out there.”

To his credit, Faughnan had to be pressed by reporters after the game at New Canaan High School’s Dunning Field to concede that the Cardinals were without their two top scorers due to injuries.

But that wasn’t the big takeaway for Greenwich, which entered the matchup behind only Ridgefield in the West Division, at 7-1 in the FCIAC and 8-2 overall.

“We learned some things today,” he said. “We were battling, we were trying to get in there.”

“That’s a good team, well coached,” Faughnan said of New Canaan. “Very, very balanced.”

The Rams’ defense limited the Cardinals to just three shots all game, according to the official scorecard (which can be seen here: http://newcanaan.patch.com/groups/sports/p/boys-lacrosse-scorecard-greenwich-vs-new-canaan-may-2).

“We never really felt that it was out of reach,” Faughnan said.

That may be because it took a few minutes for the Rams to score their first goal, and GHS was down just 2-0 after the first quarter.

But the game steadily got away as New Canaan seemed to score each time attackers Puck Richardson and Harry Stanton sniffed the crease, and the first half ended 6-0.

The Cardinals’ best chance to score may have come five minutes into the second half, when junior Ryan Flippin from the top of the crease shot over the goal, drawing groans from the GHS faithful at Dunning Stadium on a picture-perfect afternoon.

Greenwich travels to Chaminade High School in Mineola, NY on Saturday.
