The Greenwich boys hockey team produced one of its best efforts of the season Saturday night, battling Trumbull to a 2-2 tie at the Dorothy Hammill Ice Rink.

The Cardinals outshot the Eagles 44-22 and opened a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by Oscar Ladd and Eric Macken.

The Eagles (8-3-1), meanwhile, still looked sluggish, failing to convert on two power-play chances in the middle period.

Trumbull could have faced an even larger deficit if not for eight blocked shots in the second period and the continued stellar play of goaltender Matt Paolini.

The Eagles finally showed some signs of life in the third as Trevor Saggese provided a spark by scoring on a breakaway early in the period.

Mike Ahearn pulled Trumull even at 8:59, and the Eagles were able to get to overtime despite being outshot 34-19 in regulation.

Greenwich dominated the overtime with a 10-3 edge in shots. However, Trumbull preserved the tie with a pair of blocked shots in the final minutes of the extra period while the Cardinals were mounting heavy pressure.

Greenwich is back in action on Monday, when it visits Ridgefield in a 5:10 p.m. faceoff.
