Greenwich Rugby Shuts Down Westport In State Semi-Finals

In the state semi-finals match Wednesday evening, the Greenwich High School Cardinals ran away with the game, putting away Westport's Staples High School with a final score of 74 to 14.

The Staples Wreckers turned around an 0-8 season the previous year with a trip to the state semi-finals Wednesday, but couldn't seal the deal against the Cardinals, who are ranked 6th nationally.

The Cardinals' win capped a cross-country trip to Indiana for the national games the previous weekend, where they lost in the Tier II Championship match to Illinois Brother Rice Saturday.

"I was a little concerned the boys would be ready to go, but they were here," said Cardinals head coach Joe Kelly. "The boys played a little selfishly today, I was a bit uncomfortable with that, but it was a clean victory... We weren't rested to my satisfaction, but we came out here and got it done."

Wrecker's head coach Oscar Barahona said he was proud of the team and the effort they put into Wednesday's game considering the team had been riddled with injuries leading up to the game, including the loss of three seniors and six starters total.

"I thought we did well," he said. "We barely had 25 guys practicing this week, but they stepped up and I'm proud of them. Regardless of the score, they played a game to be proud of. I think it went well. We put in a lot of work in the off-season and we ended up playing in the semi-finals."
