Greenwich's David Pastore finished fifth in qualifying in the 109th Met Amateur Championship Thursday at the Piping Rock Country Club in Locust Valley, N.Y.

Pastore, who plays out of Griff Harris, posted a 66 in the morning, the low round of the day, then struggled in the afternoon with a 73 for a 36-hole total of 139.

Still, he had some margin for error after the sizzling start. The only other player to qualify from Fairfield County was Shorehaven's Tommy McDonagh, the reigning Connecticut state amateur champion.

McDonagh tied for 12th with rounds of 75 and 68 for a two-round  total of 143. The low 16 scores survived the cut and advanced to Friday's first round of match play.

McDonagh and Pastore will face each other in the round of 16 on Friday morning at 8 a.m. The quarterfinals follow in the afternoon.

Greenwich Cannons players’  Dylan Callahan, Brian Schutzman and Taylor Olmstead participated in the recent Rawlings American Legion Futures All-Star Game.

The game took place at Simsbury Memorial  Field on Saturday. The three Senior Legion players were selected to  represent Zone Four and compete against other prospects from  throughout the state.

The Futures game is an annual event that features  the top players in Connecticut who are legitimate  college or pro prospects, attracting up to 60 coaches and recruiting personnel.

Central Connecticut senior Charles Williams has been named to the preseason all-Northeast Conference defensive first team.

The 6-2, 235-pound lineman lettered in basketball and football at Greenwich High School.  

Central Connecticut, which has won four Northeast Conference titles since 2004, was picked first in the coaches' preseason poll.

The Blue Devils were 8-3 overall  and 7-1 in NEC play last season.  It marked their second straight season with a  7-1 mark in league action. They finished in a tie for the league title with  Robert Morris, but lost a tie-breaker with the Colonials for the league's  automatic bid to the playoffs.
