Greenwich native Tim Teufel, a member of the New York Mets' 1986 World Series championship team, is headed back to Queens.

As part of a shakeup of their coaching staff, the Mets on Wednesday named Teufel as their new third base coach.

Teufel has been in the Mets' system for awhile and completed his first season as the manager of the Class AAA Buffalo Bisons in 2011.

After starting out with the short-season Class A Brooklyn Cyclones, Teufel managed in St. Lucie, Savannah and Class AA Binghamton of the Eastern League in 2010.

Teufel spent six seasons with the Mets as a player from 1986-1991 and batted .444 while playing in three games in the 1986 World Series against the Boston Red Sox.

His best season with the Mets came in 1987, when he batted .308 with 14 home runs and 61 RBI in 97 games while sharing time at second base with Wally Backman.

"It has been a long journey with them and I hope it continues," Teufel recently told the Greenwich Time. "Triple-A has been a great  year for me growth wise. There are other aspects of the game that I am going to  be a part of someday and hopefully continue the relationship with  the Mets."

The Greenwich football team is looking to rebound from one of its worst defensive games in years but it will not be easy for the Cardinals.

After getting thumped by New London 51-33 last week, the Cardinals (2-1) visit Trumbull (2-0) on Thursday in a key FCIAC contest at McDougall Stadium (6 p.m.).

Greenwich actually led 26-25 at the intermission against the Whalers, but surrendered 26 unanswered points in the second half. New London's Kyle McKinnon rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries.

The Cardinals won't see anybody that explosive on Thursday, but the Eagles made quick work of their first two opponents, putting away their games against Westhill (47-13) and Fairfield Ludlowe (35-8) in the first half. Last week, the Eagles build a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised to a comfortable win.

Sophomore quarterback Jose Melo started his fourth straight game against New London in place on injured starter Liam O'Neill, who has been sidelined since suffering a concussion in a preseason scrimmage against Masuk.

Trumbull also lost its starting quarterback Brendan Moore, who went down with a quad injury against Westhill. Nick Roberts started against Ludlowe and completed 7-of-11 passes for 135 yards and three TDs against the Falcons.

Last season, Trumbull rallied for an 18-13 win at Greenwich, a key victory for the Eagles on their way to an appearance in the FCIAC championship game.
