Blondie and Jazz are two fabulous dogs

Owner's sudden death leaves two friends to crowded shelter.

As a dog and cat foster mom with a packed house in Greenwich, it was difficult not to take in Blondie and Jazz when I heard their story.

It was a weekday afternoon like any, and Blondie and Jazz's devoted Dad took them to their regular grooming appointment where they would be pampered and later picked up to spend the day together as they always did.

When he never showed up a few hours later, the groomer got worried. She could not reach him and did not hear from him--and she knew him to be not only reliable but a doting dog daddy.

It was not until the next day that she learned Blondie and Jazz's guardian had a sudden heart-attack and died. He was an elderly man.

With no family nearby to help – his brother is in the hospital – and no one able to take these beloved companions into their care, both dogs ended up at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter on Long Island.

Blondie and Jazz are together in a kennel and being provided with as much comfort as possible in a shelter with 200 other desperate dogs waiting for someone to take them home.

When they first arrived their tails were wagging and they greeted everyone like family. They gave kisses and nuzzled affectionately to the whole staff. But days have turned to weeks, and the tragic reality that daddy is not coming back has sunk in.

Their spirits are sad and what were once bright eyes and wagging tails have turned to sullen and limp, frightened dogs whose only comfort is the bond they share as they lie side by side in the scary place.

Blondie is a 6 year old Retriever mix...a beautiful, gentle girl who is as devoted to her companion Jazz as she is to everyone who shows her love. Jazz is a soulful and loving 8 year old Shepherd/Collie who finds his solace in Blondie, the true love of his life.

The shelter Director and staff have made the commitment to get them adopted together, for having lost so much already, they cannot bear to rip them apart. They both are about as perfect as dogs can get...ready to love and be loved, housebroken, good with other dogs and cats, too!! and they need to get out of the shelter now and go on to live the lives they deserve with a family who will embrace them both and help them to heal. Imagine if this happened to you...

Please be that person who you would want to be there for the ones you love should something ever happen.

I'm so sorry this happened -- could you tell us what neighborhood you live in so we have a betterRead More idea of what part of town the cat may be in? Also, I'm curious whether animal control questioned your nephew -- there is a link between people who abuse animals and those who later abuse other people (and cats seem to be the 'gateway' to larger mammals). If anyone reading this has any suggestions on how to locate or lure back this kitty, please respond.

I hope you are able to prohibit your nephew from further access to animals. You did not mention hisRead More age, bu poor treatment of animals in youth is often a precursor to similar treatment/crimes against people in later years. I hope you have taken steps to correct this behavior, or have taken it up with his parents, if they are available.
